Beachley Award, Pismo Classic Light Up Surf World
What a week for the surfing world! We've got legends getting their flowers and the next generation stepping up to the plate. First up, the one and only Layne Beachley, the seven-time world champion, just took home the prestigious Dawn Award at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. This isn't just any award—it's named after Aussie swimming legend Dawn Fraser and celebrates those who change sport for the better.
Beachley, who dominated the tour in the late '90s and early 2000s, was surprised and humbled to be recognized. She told Starts at 60, "I'm surprised I'm being celebrated for a career that ended so long ago." Her journey from sleeping in her board bag to seeing today's surfers like Molly Picklum become the sport's biggest earner is nothing short of inspiring.
In a reflective chat reported by SSBCrack, Beachley shared how women's surfing has transformed. She recalls a time when there was a "scarcity mentality" among competitors, but now, thanks to the next gen, it's all about collaboration. She's especially proud of the progress: equal pay, expanded fields, and a community that lifts each other up.
And speaking of the next stepping up, right here in the good ol' US of A, Pismo Beach hosted the "Surfing For Hope Longboard Classic" this past weekend. Top longboarders from across North America hit the waves, all vying for a spot on the 2026 WSL Longboard Tour. Despite a storm rolling through, the sun came out just in time for the competition.
Organized by the City of Pismo Beach and backed by the World Surf League, this event has become a staple since 2017. Past champs include Kai Sallas and Malia Ilagan. As Cole Robbins, a local standout, shared with KSBY News, "We started this to showcase local talent and give women their own division. It's grown into something incredible."
So from legends to rising stars, the stoke is strong. Whether you're a surfer or a photographer, these are the moments that remind us why we love the ocean. Keep riding the waves, and we'll see you out there!
