Surf's Good: Rescue, Culture & Healing Waves

There's something about the ocean that connects us all. Whether it's the thrill of a perfect wave, the camaraderie of the lineup, or the quiet moments of reflection, surfing is more than just a sport—it's a way of life. This week, we've seen some incredible stories that highlight the power of surfing to bring people together, save lives, and even heal. From a lifesaving rescue in California to a global conservation effort in Australia and an inspiring surf therapy session in South Africa, the surfing world is buzzing with positivity.

A Rescue Mission Fueled by Kindness

Let's start with a story that will warm your heart and remind you of the importance of good vibes in the water. In Southern California, surfer Scott Muir had a scary moment when he slammed his neck on a sandbar and was left motionless in the water. But thanks to a friendly exchange he'd had earlier with 19-year-old Judah Ely, Muir's life was saved. Ely noticed Muir's limp body and pulled him from the water. As Muir put it, 'I'm a firm believer that that interaction with Judah is what saved my life.' The power of kindness in the lineup is real, folks. You never know when a good vibe could be the difference between a close call and a tragedy. You can read the full story over at The Inertia.

Global Surfing Conservation Comes to Port Macquarie

Down under in Australia, Port Macquarie is making waves for a different reason. The town welcomed a delegation of international surfers who are on an East Coast tour after attending the World Surfing and Conservation Conference on the Gold Coast. The mission? To protect surfing ecosystems and manage surf amenities for future generations. The group, including former pros and rising junior stars from South America, visited the site of a future surf museum and learned about the local surfing reserves. It's awesome to see the global surfing community coming together to preserve the spots we love. You can find out more here.

Healing Waves in South Africa

In South Africa, the Roxy Davis Foundation is using the power of the ocean to create spaces of freedom and healing for people with disabilities. On a special Surf Therapy & Beach Day, the foundation brought together surfers, swimmers, volunteers, and families to celebrate inclusion. As one participant shared, 'When I'm in the ocean, I feel like I'm not missing a body part. It's like I'm fully me. I'm home.' The ocean truly is a healer. The Roxy Davis Foundation is making incredible strides in making surf therapy accessible to all South Africans. To learn more or to support their mission, check out their story here.

These stories are a reminder of why we surf: for the community, the adventure, and the healing power of the waves. Keep spreading the good vibes, and we'll see you in the water.
