Champs, Legends, and Local Stoke: Surf Week Highlights

What a week in the surf world! From the Gold Coast to California, and a tribute to an icon, the waves are bringing us together. Let's dive into the latest that's got our community buzzing.

Gold Coast Pro: Semis Set, Legends Heat in Sight

The Gold Coast Pro is hitting its stride at Snapper Rocks, with eight-time world champ Stephanie Gilmore storming into the semi-finals. The energy is high as the event looks to wrap in a single, high-voltage day of surfing. Filipe Toledo put on a masterclass against Gabriel Medina, scoring over 18 points in his heat. The WSL has issued a yellow alert, meaning conditions are lining up for an explosive finish. And if that's not enough, tomorrow also features a legends heat with Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson as team captains. The crowds are record-breaking, with barely a spare patch of sand to stand on. If you’re heading down, set your alarms: an 8am call time with a possible start at 9am. For more on the Gold Coast Pro, you can get the full breakdown right here.

Remembering Shane Stedman: A True Icon

The surf community lost one of its most colorful characters with the passing of Shane Stedman at 85. Known as the mastermind behind the ugg boot, a surfboard shaper, and a larger-than-life personality, Stedman's final moments were as epic as his life: spending his last days at his favorite spot, Crescent Head, watching the waves with his family. His son, Luke, shared a touching tribute on Instagram, describing how Shane passed away peacefully with the sun on his face, listening to "On the Road Again" by Willy Nelson. Shane’s impact on surf culture is immeasurable, from shaping popout boards to founding Ugg Australia. A paddle out in his honor is being planned at Crescent Head. OB Pier Surf and Skate Classic: 10 Years of Local Love

Back in the States, Ocean Beach in San Diego hosted the 10th annual OB Pier Surf and Skate Classic, a community event that brings together surfers, skaters, and families. The event featured live bands, food trucks, and competitions for all ages. Photographer Kristian Carreon captured the stoke, from young groms like Levi Robinson and Jesco Harrison ripping on their boards to the supportive crowds cheering them on. It's events like this that remind us why we surf—for the love of the ride and the people we share it with. Check out the amazing photos from the day over at the San Diego Union-Tribune.
