SmugMug and Pixieset are both solid platforms, and neither one was built for the problem a sports photographer actually has: the buyer does not know your name. They know the race they ran, the field they played on, and the Saturday morning it happened. Here is how the three platforms stack up when that is the actual sale you are trying to make.
SmugMug: pricing and how sales work
As of 2026, SmugMug's paid plans run $20 to $37 a month on annual billing (higher on monthly billing), and only the Portfolio and Pro tiers, $23.50 and $37 a month, unlock selling at all. On top of the subscription, SmugMug takes 15 percent of your markup on every print or product sale. On a print that costs $10 from the lab and sells for $30, SmugMug keeps $3 of your $20 markup, in addition to whatever you already paid that month just to have the shop open. SmugMug's sales tools center on named client galleries and portfolio pages, which work well when a bride already has your link. A stranger who ran a 10K and has no idea who shot it has no way to stumble onto your SmugMug page.
Pixieset: pricing and how sales work
Pixieset charges 15 percent commission only on its free plan; every paid tier, Basic at $8 a month up through Ultimate at $40 a month (annual billing), drops that to 0 percent commission. That sounds better than SmugMug's per-sale cut, but you are still paying $96 to $480 a year up front, whether or not a single sale happens that month, plus Stripe or PayPal processing fees on top. Pixieset galleries are built the same way SmugMug's are: private, link-based delivery for a specific client who already knows to expect a link in their inbox, not a public marketplace someone can search by event.
Surf Snaps: no subscription, no plan tiers, a 10 percent fee only when you sell
Surf Snaps skips the monthly plan entirely. It costs nothing to join and nothing to upload, no storage bill, no upload limit, no tier to pick. Photographers keep 90 percent of every sale, and Surf Snaps takes 10 percent, only when a photo actually sells. A $25 sale nets the photographer $22.50. There is no month where you pay $20 or $37 for an empty shop. The bigger difference is discovery: Surf Snaps is organized around the event, not the photographer's name. Athletes search by sport, place and date, so a runner looking for their photo from Saturday's race can find it without ever having heard of you. That is the exact problem SmugMug and Pixieset were not built to solve, because both assume the buyer already has your link.
Side by side
SmugMug: $20 to $37 a month plus 15 percent of markup on sales, named portfolio pages, no public event discovery. Pixieset: $8 to $40 a month for 0 percent commission (15 percent free tier), private client-gallery links, no public event discovery. Surf Snaps: free to join, 90 percent to the photographer, 10 percent fee only on completed sales, public search by sport, place and date so buyers who do not know your name can still find their photo.
Which one fits sports photography
SmugMug and Pixieset are strong choices for wedding and portrait photographers who deliver a gallery link directly to a known client. Sports photography is a different business: hundreds of strangers per event, most of whom will never receive a personal link. A platform charging a flat monthly fee for that model means paying the same $20 to $40 whether you sell five photos or fifty, and neither platform gives a stranger any way to search for themselves. The comparison in more depth, feature by feature, is on Surf Snaps vs SmugMug and Surf Snaps vs Pixieset.
Getting started
Upload your next session to Surf Snaps and it becomes a watermarked, shoppable gallery searchable by sport, location and date, no subscription required to find out if it sells. The full fee and payout breakdown is on the FAQ, and the complete walkthrough is on the how it works page. For the broader case on why event-based discovery outsells a name-based portfolio, see why nobody is buying your sports photos, it is not your photography.
One small step
Before renewing a SmugMug or Pixieset plan for another year, upload one session to Surf Snaps for free and see whether the sales come from people who never needed your link in the first place. Create a free account and find out.
