The B&S Returns: Longboards, Laughter & A Trophy on the Line
If you’re anywhere near Black Head on Sunday, August 31, the air will smell of wax, coffee and just a hint of friendly sabotage. The Black Head Longboarders are finally getting a crack at regaining the silverware when they host their annual showdown with the Saltwater Malibu Club—an event affectionately nicknamed the B&S (Black Head and Saltwater).
Two years of sketchy wind and angry tides kept the contest on ice, which means Saltwater has been polishing that trophy for longer than anyone cares to admit. “Fingers crossed the ocean behaves this time,” laughs Black Head president Mick Moylan. “We’re keen to bring it home.”
The format keeps things loose but competitive: four surfers to a heat (two from each club), judged by two members from each side. Points stack all day, banter is mandatory, and come late afternoon the club with the most collective heat wins goes home bragging—and clutching hardware.
The real winner, though, is the Great Lakes Women’s Shelter. Entry fees and on-beach collections from past editions have already chipped in $1,800, and this year’s target is even higher. So if you’ve got a longboard and a soft spot for doing good in between cheeky drop-knee cutbacks, roll down to the beach and get the full story in the Manning River Times. Bring a gold-coin donation and your loudest heckle—you’ll fit right in.
