Surf Travel Guide: Democrat Point, Fire Island

Everyone who learns to surf on Long Island eventually hears about Democrat Point, the sandy spit at the far western tip of Fire Island where a real point break peels off the end of a barrier island most visitors only know from its car free beach towns.

Why Democrat Point?

Democrat Point sits at the mouth of Fire Island Inlet, where sand pushed down the south shore by longshore drift piles up into a shifting point. That sandbar bends incoming swell into a rideable left, a rarity on a stretch of coast dominated by closed out beach breaks.

→ South to southeast swell lines up best against the point, while north to northeast wind holds the faces up clean.

↳ The same inlet currents that build the sandbar also drive strong rips, so this wave rewards surfers who already know how to read moving water, not first timers.

Getting There and Getting Around

Democrat Point sits inside Robert Moses State Park, on the mainland side of the Fire Island Inlet rather than on the car free part of Fire Island proper.

  • Fly into JFK or LaGuardia, both roughly an hour's drive from the park depending on traffic.
  • → Drive south on the Robert Moses Causeway to Robert Moses State Park, then park at Field 2, the westernmost lot.
  • ↳ From Field 2, reaching the point itself means a long walk west along the sand, a four wheel drive beach permit, or arriving by private boat.

There is no public transit directly to the point, and once you are on the sand there is no shuttle or tram, so budget real time for the walk if you are not driving onto the beach.

When to Surf Democrat Point

The wave works across the seasons whenever a south to southeast swell meets a north or northeast wind, which tends to line up most often in fall and winter as nor'easters track up the coast. Mid tide is considered the sweet spot: outgoing tide builds strong rips through the inlet, while incoming tide pushes surfers toward the impact zone, so timing a session around the tide chart matters more here than at a straightforward beach break.

Safety notes: This is an intermediate wave at minimum. Rips, undertow, and submerged rocks sit close to the takeoff zone, and the standard local advice is to cut left off the peak to stay clear of the rocks rather than ride straight into them. At low tide with a decent swell running, the sandbar can throw a genuinely hollow, barreling wave, which is also exactly when the injury risk climbs. In big swell, use the inlet's own current as a rip to paddle back out rather than fighting it on the shoulder. Winter water temperatures drop to around 41°F (5°C), so a heavy winter wetsuit, boots, gloves, and a hood are not optional.

Surf Breaks

  • Democrat Point: A sand and rock bottom point at the western tip of Fire Island, breaking left off the inlet sandbar.
Wave: A fast, occasionally hollow left, best on south to southeast swell with north to northeast wind and a mid tide.
Level: Intermediate and up, given the rips, rocks, and current.
  • Field 2 beach break (backup): The open beach break directly off the Field 2 parking area, a shorter walk if the point itself is too crowded or too strong.
Wave: A more straightforward, closeout prone beach break.
    Level: Beginner to intermediate.

Where to Stay

→ Most surfers base out of the South Shore towns on the mainland rather than on Fire Island itself, since Democrat Point sits inside Robert Moses State Park and has no lodging of its own.

Budget

Motels and chain hotels around Babylon and Bay Shore put you within a short drive of the Robert Moses Causeway for an early session.

Mid-Range

Bed and breakfasts in Bay Shore or Sayville offer a more local base with easy access to the causeway and to ferries for exploring the car free parts of Fire Island.

Luxury

Waterfront rentals around the Great South Bay, from Babylon to West Islip, put you close to the water with room for a longer stay.

Food and Drink

→ Democrat Point itself has no food concessions, so pack water and snacks for a full session at the park.

↳ Kismet, the closest Fire Island community, sits a walkable stretch of beach east of the point and has a couple of casual, seasonal spots for a post surf meal, while Bay Shore and Babylon on the mainland have the area's fuller range of restaurants and bars.

Photographing Democrat Point (Surf Snaps)

A left peeling off a shifting sandbar at the mouth of a tidal inlet, with Robert Moses' lighthouse in the background, is a genuinely distinctive Long Island frame, and one that gets photographed far less than the crowded breaks closer to the city. Photographers shooting Democrat Point can upload a gallery to Surf Snaps and keep full copyright over their images, while surfers can later browse and buy their own photos starting at $8, no account needed just to look.

FAQ

Is Democrat Point good for beginner surfers?
Not really. The point itself is an intermediate wave at minimum, given the rips, the rocks near the takeoff, and the moving inlet current. Beginners are better off at the open beach break near Field 2.

What is the best wind and swell direction at Democrat Point?
South to southeast swell lined up with north to northeast wind is the classic combination, with a mid tide considered the most workable stage of the tide.

How do you get to Democrat Point?
Park at Field 2 in Robert Moses State Park and walk west along the beach, apply for a four wheel drive beach permit, or arrive by private boat. There is no direct public transit to the point.

Is kitesurfing good at Democrat Point?
Not particularly. Local wind and kite ratings describe the spot as unsuitable for kitesurfing, so it is primarily known as a surf break rather than a kite destination.

How can I get photos of my session at Democrat Point?
Check Surf Snaps to see if a local photographer already shot the point that day, or upload your own gallery if you are shooting sessions yourself.
