Most kiteboarders chasing wind on the Oregon coast end up fighting cold ocean swell, rocks and rip currents for the privilege. Seventeen miles south of Bandon, a thin strip of dune separates the Pacific from a 236 acre freshwater lake that gets the same reliable summer wind with none of the surf. Floras Lake is one of the most useful kite spots on the West Coast, and almost nobody outside the sport has heard of it.
Why Floras Lake?
Floras Lake sits in Curry County, carved off from the ocean by a dune barrier thin enough to walk over in a few minutes, yet solid enough to keep the lake flat and warm compared to the Pacific just beyond it.
→ The lake catches steady northwest wind that averages 15 to 25 knots through the middle of the day into late afternoon, from spring through fall.
↳ A sandy, shallow bottom means you can stand up through much of the lake, which makes it one of the more forgiving places on the West Coast to learn or to push into new tricks without worrying about a reef or a rip.
There is no real local kite scene competing for space here, just a single school that has run the lake for years, a county campground, and some of the best coastal hiking in southern Oregon on your days off the water.
Getting There and Getting Around
Floras Lake is remote by design, which is a large part of why it stays quiet.
- Fly into Southwest Oregon Regional Airport (OTH) in North Bend, roughly 40 minutes north of Langlois on Highway 101.
- → From Bandon, it is about a 20 minute drive south on Highway 101 to Langlois, then west on Boice Cope Road to the lake.
- ↳ A car is necessary. There is no public transit to the lake, and gear is heavy enough that you will want your vehicle parked right at the launch.
Langlois itself is a blink of a town, a few miles inland of the lake. Most visitors base themselves at the lake directly, since the school, a bed and breakfast, and the county campground all sit within a short walk of the water.
When to Kitesurf
The riding season runs roughly April through October, with the most reliable wind from June into September, when the northwest flow fills in consistently by midday and holds into the afternoon. Shoulder months bring lighter and less predictable wind, so plan sessions around the midday to late afternoon window rather than mornings.
Safety notes: The lake is shared with nesting snowy plovers and protected wetland habitat as part of the New River Area of Critical Environmental Concern, and parts of the surrounding dunes close seasonally to protect the birds, so stay off posted areas and launch from the designated spots. The water is cold enough for a wetsuit outside midsummer. Wind can gust harder than forecast as it funnels over the dunes, so riders new to the lake should take a lesson or at least ride with someone who knows the local wind pattern before heading out alone. The ocean side of the dune has real surf and rip currents, so Floras Lake kiters generally stay on the lake rather than crossing over.

Bandon seafood:

Langlois Market:
↳ A small town general store for supplies and a quick bite if you are staying lakeside and do not want to drive. -
Pack it in:
Given how remote the lake is, many riders stock up in Bandon before heading south for the day or the week.
