Surf Travel Guide: Widemouth Bay, Cornwall

Everyone surfing North Cornwall ends up talking about Fistral and Newquay's crowds within the first five minutes. Widemouth Bay, a long sweep of sand and reef just south of Bude, gets a fraction of the attention despite being one of the more consistent breaks on this stretch of coast. It is not a secret exactly, locals surf it hard, but it stays well off the tourist trail that Newquay has become.

Why Widemouth Bay?

Widemouth Bay sits a short drive south of Bude on Cornwall's Atlantic facing north coast, with a long beach break backed by a right hand reef at one end for better waves.

→ The bay is fairly exposed and picks up west and northwest swell well, with offshore winds from the east producing the cleanest conditions, which keeps it fairly consistent across most of the year.

↳ The right hand reef adds real shape when the swell has enough size and the tide is right, giving experienced surfers a notably better wave than the open beach offers on its own.

Because Widemouth draws a loyal local crowd rather than the coach tours that head for Newquay, it can still get busy on a good day, but it rewards anyone willing to learn the bank and the tide rather than just paddling out wherever looks biggest. The bay also sits close enough to Bude itself that a flat morning at Widemouth is never a wasted trip, since Bude's own river mouth break and sea pool are a short drive back up the coast road.

Getting There and Getting Around

Widemouth Bay is a straightforward drive from two regional airports, with Bude itself acting as the local hub.

  • Fly into Exeter Airport (EXT), about an hour and 15 minutes away by car.
  • → Newquay Airport (NQY) is similarly close, around 45 minutes to an hour south.
  • ↳ A car is effectively required to get around this part of North Cornwall. Widemouth Bay sits just off the coast road a couple of miles south of Bude, with direct beach parking.

Bude itself is the natural base, a proper small seaside town with its own breaks, shops and a much shorter drive to Widemouth than basing further south in Newquay.

When to Surf

Winter, and February especially, tends to bring the cleanest and most consistent swell at Widemouth, though the bay is exposed enough to work reasonably well across most of the year. The break is surfable at any tide, but lower tide stages tend to expose better sandbanks and cleaner shape.

Safety notes: Submerged rocks are a known hazard here, particularly on the right side of the bay at higher tide, so check the bank and the tide before paddling into that section. RNLI lifeguards patrol Widemouth seasonally through the busier months, flagged swimming and surfing zones should be respected, and conditions here can get genuinely big, so this is not always a beginner's beach, despite the open, forgiving look of the main peak on smaller days.

Surf Breaks

  • Widemouth Bay main beach: An open beach break with both left and right peaks shifting along the bay.
Wave: Sand bottom, fairly consistent, generally more forgiving than the reef.
Level: Good for beginners and intermediates on smaller days, more demanding when the swell is up.
  • The reef, southern end: A right hand point setup that comes alive on a decent swell.
Wave: Reef break, more powerful and better shaped than the open beach.
    Level: Intermediate to advanced.

Bude's surf schools, well established given the town's own break, are a good option for lessons or a local conditions check before heading to Widemouth itself.
