Hemsby and Sea Palling get named in every Norfolk surf roundup. A couple of miles between them, Winterton on Sea sits quietly with its own beach break, its own dune system, and, from November onward, several hundred grey seals that have made the sand their own.
Why Winterton on Sea?
Winterton on Sea is a small village on the North Norfolk coast, backed by Winterton Dunes, a National Nature Reserve of around 270 acres. The surf here is the same kind of flinty, sand bottomed beach break you find up and down this stretch of coast, less documented than its neighbors simply because the village has never pushed itself as a surf town.
→ Like the rest of this coast, Winterton needs a northerly swell to really wake up, since the shelving sand can leave the beach looking flat on an average day.
↳ Offshore wind from the west through southwest cleans the faces up, the same pattern that works at Sea Palling and Hemsby just along the coast.
Getting There and Getting Around
Winterton sits about 8 miles north of Great Yarmouth and 19 miles east of Norwich, making it an easy stop if you are already working the Norfolk coast.
- Drive the A149 then the B1152 into the village, following the beach signs to the car park on the dunes.
- → The nearest train station is in Great Yarmouth, with a bus or short taxi ride needed to finish the journey.
- ↳ Norwich, with its own airport and rail links, makes a reasonable base if you want a proper town nearby.
The privately run beach car park takes cash only and is locked at 4pm, so plan your pack down accordingly. It sits on top of the dunes with steep, sandy terrain down to the water.
When to Surf
Autumn through early spring is the strongest window for this coast generally, once the summer's light wind gives way to the low pressure systems that push a proper northerly swell down the North Sea. The water holds some warmth into early winter before turning genuinely cold from November.
Safety notes: This stretch of coast has strong tides and currents, and warnings about drownings here are unusual for such a quiet seeming beach, so this is not a spot for beginners or anyone unfamiliar with the conditions. From November to January, a large grey seal colony pups on the sand. Keep at least 100 meters from any seal, never get between a cow and her pup, and expect the beach itself to be closed to walkers during the breeding season even though the water may still be accessible further along. Mobile signal is poor across parts of the dunes, so tell someone your plan before you go.
Surf Breaks
-
Winterton Beach (main break): A sand bottomed beach break in front of the village, working best on a northerly swell with offshore wind from the west or southwest.
Wave: Beach break, generally weaker than a reef but workable with size.
Level: Intermediate, due to current. -
Sea Palling: A short drive south, sheltered from northerly wind and known for long rights and lefts with a heavy shore dump.
Wave: Beach break, works on most tides.
Level: Intermediate. -
Hemsby: Just south again, another of the area's recognized surf beaches and a useful backup if Winterton is flat.
Wave: Beach break, similar character to Winterton.
Level: Beginner to intermediate.
Where to Stay (Hotels)
→ Winterton itself is tiny, so most comfortable stays are a short drive away in Great Yarmouth or the surrounding villages.

FAQ: Surfing Winterton on Sea
What swell and wind direction works at Winterton on Sea?
A northerly swell with offshore wind from the west or southwest is the classic setup for this stretch of Norfolk coast, strongest from autumn through early spring.
Is Winterton on Sea safe for beginners?
Not really. Local warnings note strong tides and currents here, and drownings have occurred, so this spot suits confident intermediate surfers more than first timers. Nearby Hemsby and Cromer are gentler options.
Can you surf at Winterton when the seals are on the beach?
From November to January, the beach itself is often closed to walkers during pupping season, and you must stay at least 100 meters from any seal at all times. Check locally before planning a session in these months.
How do Winterton's waves compare to Hemsby and Sea Palling?
All three share the same flinty, sand bottomed beach break character typical of this coast. Winterton simply gets written up less often, despite sitting right between two beaches that do.
Where can I find photos of my surf session at Winterton on Sea?
Search Surf Snaps by sport, place, and date on the explore page to find galleries from your day in the water.
