Surf Travel Guide: La Bocana, El Salvador

La Bocana sits at the mouth of a small river, wedged right between the party strip of El Tunco and the hotel row of El Sunzal, and it throws the best left in a country otherwise famous for rights.

Why La Bocana?

La Bocana is its own named peak, not a rebrand of the beaches on either side of it. The river outflow shapes a triangular sandbar and rock bottom that bends swell into a fast, hollow left, with a shorter, weaker right peeling the other way. Salvadoran surfers and the ISA, which has used a La Bocana venue for junior world championship heats, treat it as a serious wave in its own right.

→ The wave is widely rated the best left hander in El Salvador, a country whose coastline mostly serves up rights.

↳ It gets better as it gets bigger, holding shape from head high out to well overhead on a solid south groundswell.

Getting There & Getting Around

  • Fly into El Salvador International Airport (SAL, also called Comalapa), the country's main gateway.
  • → La Bocana is about 51 kilometers from the airport, roughly an hour's drive on the paved coastal highway, with no 4x4 required.
  • ↳ From San Salvador itself the drive is closer to 41 kilometers, about 50 minutes.
  • Everything in El Tunco is walkable, and La Bocana is a short walk down the beach from either El Tunco or El Sunzal's hotel strip. Private shuttles and airport transfers are widely available and are the simplest option; a public bus route exists but involves at least one transfer, so confirm current routes locally or just book a transfer.

When to Surf (and Stay Safe)

El Salvador runs a dry season from November through April, with clearer skies, dependable offshore wind and smaller, more consistent waist to head high surf. The wet season runs May through October, bringing afternoon rain but also some of the biggest and most powerful swells of the year, and La Libertad's coast, where La Bocana sits, is known for getting its best waves during that wetter stretch. Best swell direction is south to south southwest, best wind is offshore from the north, and the wave is generally better around high tide.

This is an advanced wave, full stop. It breaks fast and hollow over a rocky bottom, and hitting the rocks is a real risk if you miss the channel. Rip currents and undertow are present. Enter and exit from the channel to the right of the river mouth, facing the sea, to stay off the rocks. La Bocana also has real history with localism: in the 1980s it was effectively closed to outside surfers, with a locals only sign once posted at the spot. It is far more open today, but a tight, assertive local lineup is still part of the deal when it is firing, so wait your turn and show respect.

  • El Sunzal, next door: A long, forgiving right point, good for working up to La Bocana on an easier wave first.
Wave: Point break, mellow to moderate.
    Level: Beginner to intermediate.
  • El Tunco's main peak, the other direction: A punchy beach and reef setup next to the landmark rock, Piedra El Tunco.
    Wave: Beach and reef break.
    Level: Intermediate.

Where to Stay (Hotels)

Photographing La Bocana (Surf Snaps)

A fast, hollow left peeling off a river mouth, with El Tunco's rock and El Sunzal's point in the background, is a genuinely different frame from the standard Surf City shots. If you spend a session there with a camera, upload your gallery to Surf Snaps so the surfers you shot can find and buy their own photos. If you were one of the surfers, browse Surf Snaps for shots from your session, starting at $8, no account needed to look.

FAQ: Surfing La Bocana

Is La Bocana good for beginners?

No. It is a fast, hollow, advanced wave over a rocky bottom, with real localism history. Beginners are better served at El Sunzal's point or the softer sections of El Tunco nearby, both an easy walk away.

Where exactly is La Bocana?

At the mouth of a small river directly between El Tunco and El Sunzal on El Salvador's La Libertad coast, about an hour from the international airport.

What is the best season to surf La Bocana?

The dry season, November through April, brings smaller, cleaner, more consistent surf. The wet season, May through October, brings choppier mornings but some of the biggest swells of the year, and this stretch of coast is known for strong wet season waves.

Is La Bocana safe for visiting surfers today?

El Salvador's safety profile has improved sharply in recent years, and the Surf City corridor around El Tunco and El Sunzal is well touristed. The lineup itself still has a serious local presence, so standard respect and etiquette go a long way.
