Surf Travel Guide: Matapalo, Osa Peninsula

There is no town at Matapalo, no strip of surf shops, no bus stop. Just the start of Corcovado National Park, a handful of off grid lodges, and three right hand points that have quietly built a reputation among surfers willing to make the trip to the tip of the Osa Peninsula.

Why Matapalo?

Matapalo faces almost due west at the southern edge of the Osa Peninsula, right where the rainforest of Corcovado meets the Pacific, and its three named breaks all share the same right hand point setup rather than the beach break peaks common elsewhere on this coast.

→ Because there is no real town here, the surf stays genuinely uncrowded, with Pan Dulce usually seeing light numbers even when the swell is good.

↪ That same remoteness means a trip to Matapalo is a commitment, not a day trip, which is exactly why it has stayed this quiet.

Getting There and Getting Around

  • Fly from San Jose into Puerto Jimenez, the nearest town with shops, banks and an airstrip, roughly a 40 minute domestic flight.
  • → From Puerto Jimenez, it is about a 1 hour drive to Matapalo, mostly on unpaved roads.
  • ↪ There is no real public bus route into Matapalo itself, so a rental 4x4 or a transfer arranged through your lodge is the practical option.
  • Most lodges in Matapalo are off grid and run on their own power and water, so arrive with what you need, there is no corner store.

When to Surf

Surf season: May through August is the peak window for clean, consistent swell. September and October are the wettest months, and while the surf still runs, the roads in get noticeably tougher. November through April is the dry season, generally smaller, though rideable days still turn up early in that stretch.

Swell and wind: Southwest swell is what lights up all three breaks, and a north or east wind keeps Matapalo Point clean, with offshore winds typically blowing in the mornings, so an early session is the move.

Safety notes: Pan Dulce breaks over a rock shelf, so reef booties are worth packing. Backwash Bay carries more current and a takeoff zone that needs reading carefully before you commit. Matapalo Point can throw up boils on its inside section at lower tides. Between the remoteness and the lack of any lifeguard presence, this is not the place to push past your level alone.

Surf Breaks

  • Pan Dulce:
Wave: A right hand point over a cobblestone and sand covered reef, with rides of 150 to 200 meters, working on a 3 to 5 foot south to southwest swell and preferring mid to high tide.
    Level: Beginner to intermediate.
  • Backwash Bay:
Wave: A more powerful, often hollower right hand reef and point near a rocky outcrop, best on a 4 to 6 foot southwest swell and working across most of the tide.
    Level: Intermediate to advanced.
  • Matapalo Point:
Wave: A right hand point with rides of 300 meters or more on a 5 to 8 foot southwest swell, cleanest with a north or east wind.
    Level: Solid intermediate to advanced.

Food and Drink

→ There are no restaurants at Matapalo itself, so eating out generally means a meal included at your lodge. The closest real food scene is an hour away in Puerto Jimenez, where Il Giardino covers Italian, international and seafood dishes, Marisqueria Corcovado focuses on seafood, and Pizza Mail.it serves pizza. A specific, sourced current dollar price for an individual dish at any of these three was not available at the time of writing, so treat them as reliable names to look for on arrival rather than a priced menu.
