Surf Travel Guide: Scarborough, North Yorkshire

Scarborough has been pulling surfers into the North Sea since the 1890s, long before anyone was calling Britain's coastline a surf destination. North Bay and South Bay sit on opposite sides of the same headland, one a rocky point and reef for people who already know what they are doing, the other a softer beach break for everyone else.

Why Scarborough?

Scarborough is the Yorkshire coast's main surf town, with two distinct beaches that cover most of what a visiting surfer needs inside a single resort.

→ North Bay is a reef and point break that rewards the right tide and wind, while South Bay, below the castle headland, is a softer beach and point break that has long been the easier option for newer surfers.

↪ Local instructors who have taught here since the late 1980s say that on its best days, with the swell, tide and wind all lining up, Scarborough holds its own against anywhere else in the country.

Getting There and Getting Around

  • Arrive by train at Scarborough railway station, served from York, Leeds and Hull.
  • → South Bay is about an 11 minute walk from the station, while North Bay is roughly a 6 minute drive or bus ride on routes 8 or 777.
  • ↪ Moving between the two bays takes about 20 minutes on foot, or a ride on the open top number 109 bus from the Spa Theatre.
  • Parking is available at Northstead Lower and Upper car parks near North Bay, and at the South Bay Underground, Westwood and North Street car parks, with rates from roughly £2.20 an hour up to about £13 for a full day in peak season, and free parking outside the main season.

When to Surf

Surf season: Winter and spring bring the biggest, most consistent swell to both bays, while autumn is often recommended for beginners and intermediates, with milder water and fewer crowds than the depths of winter.

Swell and wind: North Bay wants a north northeast swell with offshore wind from the west. South Bay works best on a north swell with offshore wind from the northwest, though a west southwest offshore has also been reported there.

Water and crowds: This is cold North Sea water, sitting around 13 degrees Celsius through autumn, so a winter wetsuit, boots, hood and gloves are the standard kit outside summer. Both bays get crowded when the surf is up, and South Bay carries a Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeguard patrol in season, weekends in early May, then daily from late May into early September, 10am to 6pm, swimming and bodyboarding kept between the red and yellow flags.

Safety notes: Rocky sections at North Bay can be cut off by a rising tide, so keep track of the water behind you. Both bays are tide dependent reef, point and beach setups rather than simple open sand, so check conditions before paddling out, and expect cold water shock if you have not surfed recently.

Surf Breaks

  • North Bay:
Wave: A reef and point break with left and right hand waves, best around mid tide, holding size well on a good north northeast swell.
Level: Intermediate to advanced, due to rocks and tide timing.
  • South Bay:
Wave: A beach and point break with softer, more forgiving swells than North Bay, breaking both left and right.
Level: Beginner friendly, and the home of the town's main surf school.
  • Cayton Bay (just south of town):
Wave: A separate beach a short drive away, popular as an overflow spot when Scarborough itself is busy.
Level: All levels, depending on the day's swell.
