Kitesurf Travel Guide: Hookipa Beach, Maui

Ask any windsurfer or kitesurfer on earth to name the one beach that built their sport and most of them land on the same cliff above a reef just east of Paia. Hookipa Beach Park is where windsurfing's biggest names made their names, and it still draws more spectators to the cliff than it does beginners to the water.

Why Hookipa?

Hookipa sits on Maui's north shore, a few minutes east of Paia on the Hana Highway, where the island's geography funnels the trade winds into some of the most reliable wind on the planet.

→ Northeast trade winds dominate from roughly May through September, with afternoon winds commonly hitting 20 knots and up, typically peaking between about 1 and 5 p.m.

↪ Winter, October through April, swaps the trade winds for swell, sending big surf into nearby Peahi (Jaws), while Hookipa itself gets gustier and more unpredictable conditions.

Getting There and Getting Around

  • Fly into Kahului Airport (OGG), with Hookipa about 20 minutes away by car along the Hana Highway.
  • → The beach is a few minutes east of Paia town, which is the practical base for food, gear and lodging on this side of the island.
  • ↪ The cliff lookout above the beach is free and open to the public, and it is usually as crowded with spectators as the water is with riders on a good trade wind afternoon.
  • Parking turns over quickly but can still fill on busy afternoons, so bring water and a hat if you end up circling or waiting.

When to Kitesurf or Windsurf

Season: May through September for the most reliable trade wind, with afternoons the prime window. October through April brings bigger winter swell to the area, especially at nearby Jaws, with gustier and more variable wind at Hookipa itself.

Who it suits: Not beginners. The reef here is unforgiving and the lineup is full of professionals and lifelong locals. Beginners are better served learning at Kanaha on Maui, Kailua on Oahu, or Anini on Kauai, then graduating to Hookipa once they can read a reef break under power.

Rules and etiquette: County rules bar windsurfing before 11 a.m., and kiteboarders generally follow the same unwritten start time out of respect for the surfers who have the morning. Wind sport riders yield to surfers, swimmers, paddlers and canoes, and if the main lineup fills up, windsurfers and kiters are expected to move further down the beach rather than crowd in.

Safety notes: The reef is shallow and the wave is intermediate to advanced, with little forgiveness for a rider who is not ready for it.

Kitesurf and Surf Spots

  • Hookipa main peak (Pavilions / "H'poko"):
Wave: Shallow reef break, intermediate to advanced, a world class wave on the right swell and wind combination.
Level: Advanced. Not a learning spot for any wind sport.

Photographing Hookipa (Surf Snaps)

A kite looping against a Maui sunset at Hookipa, or a windsurfer airborne off the main peak, are some of the most reliably dramatic action shots in the sport, which is exactly why the cliff lookout fills with photographers on a good trade wind afternoon. If that gallery is sitting on your memory card, upload it to Surf Snaps, where there is no subscription, no listing fee and no storage bill, just a 10% revenue share paid monthly whenever a photo sells, and you keep copyright the whole time. If you were out at Hookipa recently, or shooting from the cliff, search Surf Snaps by sport, place and date, with photos starting at $8. Surf Snaps also has a dedicated post on kitesurfing photography tips worth reading before your next session on the cliff.

FAQ: Kitesurfing and Windsurfing at Hookipa

Is Hookipa good for beginners?

No. Almost no one learns to windsurf or kitesurf at Hookipa. The reef is shallow and the lineup is full of professionals, so beginners are better off at Kanaha on Maui or Kailua on Oahu first.

What time can I start windsurfing or kiteboarding at Hookipa?

County rules bar windsurfing before 11 a.m., and kiteboarders generally follow the same unwritten start time, yielding to surfers, swimmers and paddlers throughout the day.

When is the best time of year for wind at Hookipa?

Roughly May through September for the most reliable trade winds, with afternoons the prime window. Winter brings bigger swell to nearby Jaws but gustier wind at Hookipa itself.

Can I surf at Hookipa too?

Yes, the reef at the main peak is a genuine surf wave as well, though it is intermediate to advanced and shares the lineup with windsurfers and kiters by the same yield rules.
