Surf Travel Guide: Thurso, Scotland

At the top of mainland Scotland, a cold and quiet town has one of the best right-hand barrels in Europe. Thurso, in Caithness, is often called the cold-water surfing mecca of the world, and it has hosted the Scottish Surfing Championships since 1973. Why Thurso?

Thurso sits on Scotland's north coast, facing the North Atlantic, and it is the only settlement of any size with full facilities in the area. To the west, beaches are framed by rocky headlands, and to the east the Caithness coast is carved from flat slab stone that produces powerful, beautifully shaped waves. Thurso East, a fast reef break at the mouth of the River Thurso beneath the ruins of Thurso Castle, is the jewel in the crown. Remoteness and cold water keep the crowds to a minimum, which is exactly what makes surfing here so special.

Getting There & Getting Around

Thurso is remote, but it is well connected for a town this far north.

The closest major airport is Inverness Airport, about 2.5 hours away by car or about three hours by train. Wick Airport is about half an hour away.

↳ Rent a car. The surf spots are spread out along the coast and the North Coast 500 route passes right by. Scrabster, two miles north, is the ferry port for Orkney.

When to Surf

The best time to surf Thurso is fall and winter, from September to May, when north to northwest groundswells and offshore southerly to southeasterly wind line up. Surf-Forecast lists February as the cleanest month. The water ranges from about 43°F (6°C) in winter to 57°F (14°C) in summer, so a thick wetsuit is essential all year: a 4/3 is advisable even in summer, and in winter a 6/5/4 with hood, gloves and boots. Rips and big tidal ranges greatly affect the surf, and the reef breaks are heavy places that only experienced surfers should attempt.

Surf Breaks

Thurso East: A fast reef break, one of the UK's best right barrels, best on north to northwest swell with an offshore southerly wind and a mid tide. The drop is relatively easy, but the take-off zone is compact and crowded when it is on.
Wave: Long, hollow right over a kelp-covered reef.
Level: Advanced. Not for beginners.
Thurso Beach: The town beach, mostly sandy with the occasional rock towards the western corner. Holborn Head shelters it from big west swells, while north swells flood in more easily.
Wave: Beach break, best when the swell is under about 5 feet.
Level: Beginner to intermediate.
Brimms Ness and Dunnet Bay: More exposed spots along the coast. Brimms Ness picks up nearly any swell, and the reefs here are heavy.
Wave: Slab reefs and beach break.
Level: Advanced (reefs) to intermediate (beach).
Melvich: A river-fed sandy cove in Sutherland, west of Caithness, with a sandbar that can produce long rights, and it is a good place to escape any hint of a crowd.
Wave: Sandbar rights and lefts.
Level: Intermediate.
