Wales has plenty of famous surf beaches, but one of the wildest and most powerful is tucked away at the far south-west tip of Pembrokeshire. Freshwater West, known to locals as "Fresh West," catches nearly every Atlantic swell and has hosted the Welsh national championships. Why Freshwater West?

Freshwater West strings along the western edge of the southernmost peninsula in Pembrokeshire. It faces directly west, which makes it the most exposed beach in the region, and it is considered to pick up more swell than any other surf break in Wales. Long, wide sands are flanked by reef at the end and in the middle, so there are plenty of peaks to choose from, and it works on most swells and all tides. It has stayed refreshingly undeveloped: there are no cafes or restaurants at the beach, just dunes, sand and Atlantic light. It was also a filming location for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and Dobby's Grave is about half a kilometre from the beach.

Getting There & Getting Around

Freshwater West is remote, and that is part of its appeal.

The closest major airport is Cardiff Airport (CWL), about 76 miles (122 kilometers) away in a straight line, or a couple of hours by road.

Bring everything you need. There are no cafes at the beach, though a snack van occasionally visits, and the nearest pubs are in villages such as Angle and Castlemartin, with more choice in Pembroke town.

When to Surf

Freshwater West works all year, and it is dependable. Surf-Forecast reports April as the cleanest month, with a west swell and east-northeast wind the ideal combination. Summer can give neat left-hand walls, while winter sessions can produce big A-frames on the sandbars towards the centre of the bay. The waves can reach about 8 feet on a big swell day. Wear a full wetsuit, with boots, gloves and hood in the colder months, because the Atlantic is cool year round.

Safety note: The whole bay is rippy, and rocks and reef are a hazard. When it is big, it can be treacherous even for experienced surfers. The Main Beach: A long beach break with peaks that open up at different stages of the tide. When the sandbanks, swell, wind and tide align, it can produce world-class waves.

The Reefs: Reef sections at the north end and in the middle of the bay that offer a different, more hollow wave.

Whitesands and Newgale: Two more consistent beaches a longer drive north in Pembrokeshire, with facilities, lifeguards and surf schools in summer. Good alternatives when Freshwater West is too big.
