St Ives is better known for its art galleries and harbour views than for surf, which is exactly why Porthmeor Beach, its one proper surf beach, still feels like a find even though it sits a five minute walk from the town centre.
Why St Ives?
Porthmeor is semi-sheltered by the headland around St Ives, which gives it offshore conditions more often than most of Cornwall's exposed north coast beaches. That makes it a genuinely good learner beach on its day, while the wave along the harbour wall, known as the Breakwater, gives experienced surfers something sharper to aim for when a big swell runs.
→ Porthmeor works across a wide range of swell and tide because it is tucked slightly out of the worst southwesterly wind, unlike more exposed beaches further along the coast.
↳ The Breakwater wave, breaking along the harbour wall itself, only comes alive in winter or on a genuinely big swell, and it is strictly for experienced surfers only.
Getting There & Getting Around
- Fly into Newquay Airport (NQY), about 45 minutes by car, or into London and take the train.
- → By train from London Paddington, the journey to St Erth takes around 5 to 7 hours, where you change onto the branch line.
- ↳ The St Erth to St Ives branch line is one of the most scenic short rides in England, and takes about 10 minutes.
- Porthmeor Beach is a short, flat walk from the town centre and the St Ives train station. The small beachside car park fills quickly on sunny days, so arrive early or park further out and walk in.
When to Surf (and Stay Safe)
Porthmeor is surfable throughout the year, with its offshore-leaning exposure making it more consistent than many Cornish beaches. Winter and the shoulder months bring the bigger Atlantic groundswells and the best chance of the Breakwater wave firing, while summer tends to bring smaller, gentler waves that suit beginners and longboarders. RNLI lifeguards patrol Porthmeor from Easter through the start of November, 10am to 6pm.
The beach itself is sandy with a gentle slope, but conditions get choppier without offshore wind, and the small car park is a real bottleneck on busy days. The Breakwater, right along the harbour wall, should be left to confident, experienced surfers only. Dogs are banned from the beach 15 May to 30 September, 10am to 6pm, which matters if you are travelling with one.

Photographing St Ives (Surf Snaps)
A longboarder cross stepping at Porthmeor with the gallery town and harbour behind them is a genuinely different backdrop from most UK surf shots. If you spend a morning there with a camera, upload your gallery to Surf Snaps so the surfers you shot can find and buy their own photos. If you were one of the surfers, browse Surf Snaps for shots from your session, starting at $8, no account needed to look.

A wave that breaks along St Ives harbour wall, only working in winter or during a big swell, and strictly for experienced surfers because of its power and proximity to the harbour structure.

Porthmeor works year round thanks to its sheltered exposure, but winter and the shoulder months bring the biggest Atlantic groundswells.
How do I get to St Ives without a car?
