Surf and Kitesurf Guide: Perranporth, Cornwall

Perranporth is three miles of open sand on Cornwall's north coast, big enough to hold a beginner lesson, a pack of longboarders and an advanced kiter all launching from different ends of the same beach without getting in each other's way.

Why Perranporth?

Few Cornish beaches offer this much room. The surf is rated a regional classic, consistent more than 150 days a year, with peaks good enough for beginners at the main part of the beach and heavier, barreling low tide waves for anyone who wants more. The same size and exposure that makes it a good surf beach also makes it a serious, experienced-only wind sports spot when a south or southwest wind blows.

→ Perranporth's surf wants a west to northwest swell with wind from the east or southeast, and it holds a rideable wave on almost any tide.

↳ For wind sports, the cliffs at the northern end create gusty, unpredictable launches, so the better approach is from the Perran Sands end to the south, and only in experienced hands.

Getting There & Getting Around

  • Fly into Newquay Airport (NQY), about 20 to 25 minutes by car from Perranporth.
  • → By train, the nearest station is Truro, roughly 20 minutes away by car or taxi.
  • ↳ There is no direct rail line into Perranporth itself, so a car or pre-booked taxi from Truro or Newquay is the practical option.
  • The beach has several free and paid car parks along the seafront, which fill up fast on a sunny summer weekend.

When to Surf or Kitesurf (and Stay Safe)

Perranporth is surfable year round and is genuinely one of the more consistent beaches in Cornwall, busiest in summer and far quieter in winter when the biggest swells tend to arrive. Low to medium tide on a rising swell generally gives the best shape. For wind sports, south and southwest wind is the target direction, but this is explicitly an advanced and experienced rider's spot, not a beginner kite beach.

Rips and undertow are common here, especially at low tide, and HM Coastguard has responded to real rescues at Perranporth after rip currents caught surfers by surprise, including at the northern end near Chapel Porth. Low tide can also bring a heavy shorebreak with real punch to it. For wind sports, the cliffs at the north end create gusty, high tide launches that catch out less experienced riders, and the walk down to and back up from the beach is demanding. Check conditions and lifeguard flags before heading in, and if you are new to the area, ask at a local surf shop which section is working.

Surf Breaks and Wind Sports Zones

  • Main beach (central Perranporth): Left and right beach break peaks over sand, the easiest and most forgiving section.
Wave: Beach break, medium mellow steepness, good shape on a rising tide.
    Level: Beginner to intermediate.
  • Southern end, toward Perran Sands: Similar beach break peaks, generally the better launch point for wind sports away from the cliffs.
Wave/Wind: Beach break plus a cleaner wind sports launch.
Level: Intermediate to advanced for wind sports.
  • Northern end, near the cliffs and Chapel Porth: More powerful, with wedges and side wash off the cliffs, and known rip currents.
Wave/Wind: Heavier beach break, gusty cliff wind.
    Level: Advanced only.

If you were one of the riders, browse Surf Snaps for shots from your session, starting at $8, no account needed to look. FAQ: Surfing and Kitesurfing Perranporth

Is Perranporth good for beginner surfers?

Yes, at the main part of the beach on a normal day. The northern end near the cliffs and Chapel Porth is more powerful and better left to experienced surfers.

Is Perranporth good for beginner kitesurfers?

No. The cliffs create gusty, unpredictable launches and the swell here is serious, so this is an advanced and experienced rider's spot for wind sports, not a beginner beach.

What is the main hazard at Perranporth?

Rips and undertow, especially at low tide, with real documented rescues at the northern end near Chapel Porth. A heavy low tide shorebreak is also worth respecting.

When is the best time to surf Perranporth?

It is surfable year round and genuinely consistent, with the biggest swells typically arriving in winter and the calmest, most crowded days in summer.

Where can I find photos of my Perranporth session?

Search Surf Snaps by sport, place and date to see if a photographer caught your wave or your kite session.
