California Gets a New Wave Pool, Maui Finds Heat, and Surf Safety
Surf is up in new places this summer. California just got a fresh dose of pool-powered surf with the opening of DSRT Surf in Coachella Valley. Wavegarden celebrated its second U.S. wave pool, and the numbers are wild: 1,000 waves per hour and more than 60 world-class waves. The barrel setting sounds like a dream. Sessions start around $60 an hour. You can read the full story over at The Inertia.
Maui Windsurfers Take Fiji
Meanwhile, Maui windsurfers Bernd Roediger and Morgan Noireaux kept the ocean bragging rights close to home at the Fiji Surf Pro. Roediger took first place at Cloudbreak despite a strained ACL and a month without windsurfing. Noireaux scored a stunning 9.5 on the highest single wave and finished third. Roediger clinched the championship with a final score of 18.07. The top female title went to Jane Seman of Australia. Roediger said, 'It is an incredible feeling.' California Lifeguards Sound the Alarm
And on the California coast, lifeguards are warning beachgoers about hazardous surf, including sneaker waves and strong rip currents. They also announced free life jacket stations. The message is simple: the ocean is beautiful, but it is not a swimming pool. Respect the conditions. You can read more over at Channel 3000.
