Your athlete will be out there for most of a day, and you will see them for seconds at a time. Here is how to plan a spectator day at IRONMAN Florida, use the tracker to time your arrival and get the shot, and when a photographer will do better than a phone.
Step 1: Know the plan
Visit Panama City Beach IRONMAN Florida is listed for Saturday, November 7, 2026, with a 6:00 a.m. start and the finish at Pier Park. Ask your athlete for their bib number, their swim wave, their target times for each discipline and what they will be wearing. Agree on a bright sign or hat so they can spot you.
Step 2: Set up the tracker
Use the official IRONMAN Tracker app or website and add your athlete's bib number before the race, while you are on Wi-Fi. Cell service can be patchy near busy spots. Screenshot your athlete's expected splits as a backup, and carry a power bank.
Step 3: Pick your spots
- The swim exit and beach run: the early frame, around the Russell-Fields City Pier. Check the spectator guide for access.
- Transition and the bike: a good spot to see them mount and dismount. Most of the bike is inland on open roads, so do not stand in the road.
- Front Beach Road: the marathon is two loops, so you can see your athlete several times from one spot.
- The finish at Pier Park: crowded and loud. Many athletes finish after dark, so plan a place to wait and warm clothes.
Step 4: Time your arrival
Use the tracker to see when your athlete leaves transition and reaches each timing mat, then add a buffer. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to get a good place. On the run, the two loops let you correct if you miss them the first time.
Step 5: Get the shot with your phone
- Stand near the front of the crowd, at an angle to the road rather than straight on.
- Use burst mode, and start when your athlete is about 20 feet away.
- Tap to focus on the road where they will be, and lock exposure if your phone allows it.
- Use the 2x or 3x lens instead of digital zoom.
- Take a short video too. Athletes wave and smile for a second.
- Cheer first and check the photo later.
Why a photographer often beats a phone
A long race has long distances, changing light and a crowd. A photographer has a telephoto lens, a chosen position and the focus to shoot hundreds of frames while you cheer. Independent photographers also pick spots with feeling, such as the beach run or a quiet stretch of the late loop.
- Buy after the race. Search Surf Snaps Explore by sport, place and date. You can browse without an account, and photographers set their own prices, from $8 per photo.
- Hire for the next race. Photographers who take bookings show a rate and open hours on their profile. Every request needs the photographer's yes, and Surf Snaps takes nothing from bookings.
For the long day
Bring sun protection by day and warm layers for the evening. Drink water, eat and take breaks. Your athlete will be out for hours, and you will need energy for the finish.
If you are a photographer
Families are your best buyers, because they know where they stood. Upload your set to Surf Snaps, name the spot and the discipline in each session and share the link. Joining and uploading are free, and the Surf Snaps fee of up to 10% only applies when a photo sells and can be passed on to the customer. Check the organizer's media policy before you list race photos for sale.
